‘Watson, I have failed. Nobody wants a dog that attacked his master, no matter how provoked he was. His fate is sealed.’

Roy trembled as Dr Watson’s gentle touch massaged his neck and shoulders.

‘Surely, Holmes, you could take him to Sussex with you.’

‘No. He would die of loneliness. Wolf-hounds are very social, whereas I am, by nature, a solitary creature. Roy has had a great shock and needs someone to help him recover. You could do that.’

‘If you are implying that I could replace you with a dog-‘

‘-It is ideal. You need to be needed too.’

I can easily picture Watson with a dog of some sort or other, so why not Roy? The Presbury family would not be eager to keep him, nor would Roy be able to trust the Professor any more. And Holmes is a genius, and since it is his idea, he would agree with you that it was an excellent one!
