‘Can you cut me loose?’ Watson pressed a jackknife into Holmes’ hand.

Holmes hesitated ‘It’s Corcoran’s! How did you get it?’

‘Picked his pocket while he beat me.’

‘You’re lucky he didn’t use it on you.’

‘His fists were… more than sufficient.’

‘Quite. Still, I don’t see how—‘

‘Do you remember… Wiggins boasting that he could teach anyone to pick pockets?’ said Watson, rubbing the numbness from his newly freed hands. ‘I challenged him to prove it.’

Holmes examined the heavy door. ‘Did Wiggins also teach you to pick locks?’

‘No… but that’s okay… I also lifted Corcoran’s key.’
