My fellow-lodger sits at his desk and the words flow effortlessly from his pen.

Writing has become his purpose and his vivid imagination takes him places where his pain and disability do not exist.

Watson looks up and gives me a smile to reassure me that he is content.

But he is a terrible liar even when he says not a word. In his heart, he is a man of action, not a man of words, so to be confined to our Baker Street flat day after day eats away at his soul.

Perhaps my investigations will engage his interest.

Thank you for this thoughtful drabble. Indeed, the canon Holmes might very well have considered this.

Thank you for your kind words. I always try to write ACD canon Holmes as mindful of his friend, even if he doesn't always show it.

And the rest is history... Erm, fiction... Erm, fan-fiction!
I like writing the early years' stories best.

Thank you! I try to to keep our heroes in character, and rein in the angst. (Except when I don't!)

That's a much nicer reason for him to draw Watson into his work than stung pride from Watson's laughter at his article.

Thanks! I try to write Holmes a little less abrasive than ACD canon.

And of course doing it in that lovely, offhanded manner - "Oh, certainly, if you've nothing better to do" - to show it's not a charity case.

Oh yes. Good point there!
Watson would not accept charity gracefully.

Although he doesn't show it all the time, Holmes is s good friend to Watson, and the good doctor deserves to have good friends.

Doyle wrote Holmes as a jerk to Watson sometimes and BBC seems to have taken it even further. I prefer to write canon verse Holmes and Watson as good friends to each other despite how Watson's stories may seem, and keeping in mind Victorian societal morality.

Yes! How they handle Holmes' personality is the biggest problem I have with the BBC series. The fics based on BBC are generally better about it, but that's one reason I almost exclusively stick to Victorian era in reading and writing.

To me, BBC is about caricature and not character. This is why whenever I try to write BBC, it ends up cracky.
