My friend was sombre upon his return from his morning walk.

‘There has been a coup and they’ve murdered the queen.’

My face betrayed my emotions. Her Majesty had been Britain’s reigning monarch for all of my life. I was educated in her schools. I had marched under her banner. It would be the end of an era. Who could have been so bold? Foreign spies? Anarchists? Irish nationalists?

‘Not our sovereign, my dear fellow! I’m sorry to have alarmed you so,’ he said as he revealed the tiny apian body cradled in a matchbox.

Yes. That is what I was going for, except that Queen Victoria would have passed away before Holmes retired to Sussex. So, Holmes' interest in bees must have started before he left London?

Maybe he starts with one teeny, tiny hive in a corner of one room at 221b that no one will ever really notice is there...until the morning Watson stalks into Holmes' room, glaring, with a full bee beard. "Oh, good, they're swarming!" Holmes says eagerly.
