‘So, to continue: An invalided veteran, a police Inspector, and a street arab walk into a bar…
‘A huge brawl is underway and the subject of their summons is already down, set upon by three ruffians. The Yarder is recognised and most flee but those that remain turn upon him. The urchin springs at a man with a knife and has sunk his teeth into the thug’s flexor carpi ulnaris, leaving one great brute left for the veteran.’
‘That’s not at all humourous. What’s the punchline?’
Watson grinned, rubbing his knuckles.
‘A solid right uppercut to the chin, of course!’
