Nearly two years after the death of my friend I was summoned to the Diogenes Club. I dare say Mycroft Holmes was not impressed at the condition of my boots nor how threadbare my cuffs had become. If he saw through my façade he was polite enough to make no mention of it.

After a generous luncheon he accompanied me to the door and asked me to wait while he retrieved something. I feared he would offer me money, however, when he returned, he presented me with an umbrella. It was a bright sunny day.

Two hours later, it rained.

I never thought of their deductiveness working that way, but how reasonable it is.

I hope it was a very good lunch.

I assure you, the luncheon was sumptuous and up to Mycroft's high standards of quality and hospitality.
Also, consider this: why would Mycroft need to predict the weather when he has Mycroft's Weather Control Device © (patent pending) in his secret library?
(Please pardon the cracky thought that just occurred)

As a Branestawm fan, I feel this cannot end well. But I'd certainly be interested in hearing how it does end.

Good for Mycroft for supplying the umbrella, but at the same time, boo hiss on Mycroft for...well, for doing what he had to do. Poor Watson.

Great use of the prompt!

Thanks!
And kudos to you for spotting what Mycroft was up to.

Very touching! I worry about Holmes here, as, clearly, does Mycroft. He knows he can't "help" too much because Holmes will never accept it--but he does what he can.

This is very interesting. I wrote the story as if it was Watson who had been summoned to see Mycroft, but your reply got me thinking of the implications of if it were Sherlock grieving the loss of Watson instead. The results are sad in a totally different way. Thanks!

Whoops, sorry for any confusion! Not being familiar with the source material (something which I am in the process of correcting as I have ordered the first of Gaslight books from Amazon!) I took a guess at the backstory--and guessed wrong. LOL. I guess I saw "meeting at Diogenes" and my mind just automatically filled in Sherlock and Mycroft. Of course it makes much more sense that Sherlock would be dead here. My mind is a weird place sometimes...

No worries! This was meant to be a hiatus vignette which has Mycroft checking to see how Watson is faring without Sherlock Holmes. Also, to clarify, my use of "gaslight" means a mashup of victorian era Sherlock Holmes, borrowing from various period sources, but mostly ACD canon compliant.

Thanks! I felt the need to borrow BBC Mycroft's umbrella for a cameo.
