In Afghanistan most of the food we had was unfamiliar to me. Fortunately, I was more adventurous back then and long days of hard work gave me quite an appetite. Unlike some of my companions, I found the new flavours quite to my liking. Word of my appreciation reached the ears of our cook who treated me to whatever exotic new dishes could be derived from our dwindling supplies. Soon there was only rice and beans left.

We marched on July 27th without breakfast and with water bottles only half-full, not realising that curried lentils would be our last meal.
