Four weeks and three days feels like an eternity to the bedridden. Even as pain gradually subsides into boredom, time passes slowly. This was Dr Watson’s lot as he recuperated from his broken arm.

To the relief of all concerned, Watson’s mood improved when he became self-ambulatory and could attend to his own toilet. Frustrated with his dominant arm encased in plaster, he performed his tasks in a clumsy, exhausting manner which left him depressed.

In the fourth week Dr Stamford removed the bulky cast and pronounced Watson hale.

‘Enough laying around for you, Watson,’ said Holmes. ’The game’s afoot!’
