Fandom: Sherlock Holmes (Gaslight)
Characters: Dr John H. Watson
Summary: An undercover investigation

Author's Notes: July 1st 2015 prompt: Tempting Fate. "What's the worst that could happen?"

.oOOo.

Magistrate Poundrie knew he was tempting fate as he sentenced another six men to thirty-one days hard labour. Perhaps the pattern in his enforcement of the anti-vagrancy statutes had gone unnoticed, or perhaps society turned a blind eye.

The railway’s need for gravel had found a use for all sorts of outcasts and the Antrim Quarry’s ‘gratuity’ for each additional labourer was most welcome.

Of this current lot, only the discharged soldier caused him concern. Already lamed, he was certain to draw his custodians’ attention, and considering their proclivities for corporal punishment, Poundrie might not get his five shilling’s worth.

Now continued in Hard Labour

Starting JWP off with a bang! Or, in Watson's case after serving this kind of hard time, a whimper.

Thanks! A whimper is more to the liking of most of this comm, I believe?

Poor Watson. I do hope Holmes comes and saves the day. Else he is going to have one very grouchy and sick Watson convalescing in Baker Street at the end of the 31 days hard labour!

Grouchy and sick Watsons are the purpose of this comm, don't you know?
I'm sure Holmes will be along soon to save the day. (Probably)

31 days uh? I'll end just in time for a deserved respite in August!
Though I'll always be hoping that Holmes reveals himself as the shining knight to the rescue in times like this! Because otherwise: Oh Watson!

Yes, poor Watson. July is a very unkind month for him.
(The hint is in the summary. This is part of an undercover investigation... Holmes must be here somewhere. Probably)

What's the worst that could happen? Oh me oh my, methinks Poundrie -- and the custodians -- are going to learn a hard lesson indeed! :D

Thanks! I agree. Any magistrate who would sentence a man to a month's hard labour for the sake of a five shilling kick-back is bound for some comeuppance.

"Holmes, what symbol are you using for this signal?"

"It's a deerstalker and two crossed magnifying lens."

"It looks more like a bat to me."

"A bat?!? Don't be absurd!"

Thanks! Surely, with so much at stake, Holmes will solve this one quickly.

Thanks! Such a shame that Judge Poundrie will soon be no longer receiving his kick-backs.
