Young John Watson had wanderlust. His first commission as a medical officer took him to India and that journey was quite beyond anything he ever imagined. However, at age twenty-six, wracked by injuries and illness, he was discharged home to Britain; his travelling days were over.

In the years that followed, Dr Watson discovered a whole new world right at his doorstep. The Great Metropolis attracted people from all walks of life. Even Sherlock Holmes was unfamiliar with some of the corners of London where Watson plied his trade.

So, in many ways, the world had come to John Watson.

I picture young Watson and being adventurous and inquisitive. His life would have been extraordinary no matter what (and subject to a certain amount of peril, especially in July).
