One of the sisters placed the back of her hand lightly against his forehead.

…feverish…

Watson nearly fainted from vertigo when they raised him to a seated position. A spoon of mash brushed his lips. Swallowing was difficult. A feeding tube lay ready on the orderly’s tray.

…please, not that…

Their manner was not cruel. They handled him with clinical detachment. Wide leather restraints secured his arms to the side of his bed.

…too weak…

He stared at the string tied around his ring finger.

Remember.

It brought to mind a familiar voice and the aroma of strong tobacco.
