Celebrations were in order.
‘This round’s on me, landlord,’ said Inspector Lestrade. ‘Doctor, would you care to do the honours?’
‘Very well,’ said Dr Watson, standing and raising his glass.
‘To the sixth Napoleon: which, except for its hidden treasure, bore a striking resemblance to its five predecessors.’
Lestrade lifted his glass and suddenly paused as the words sunk in. Watson chuckled merrily.
‘Say nothing to encourage him, Lestrade,’ Holmes warned.
‘And now let us finally declare,’ Watson continued, ‘that this case was a bust.’
Holmes only rolled his eyes. ‘Do you see what I have to put up with?’
