Dr Watson manoeuvred his wheelbarrow closer to the youth breaking rocks.
‘Are you Chesney Carlyle of Philadelphia?’
Without breaking his rhythm the young man grunted ‘Yes.’
‘I’m John Watson. Your father is looking for you. I’m here to help.’
Carlyle stretched his back and eyed Watson who began shovelling the scree into his wheelbarrow. ‘No offence but you’re worse off than I am. What do you know about it?’
‘I know you were sentenced under a false name.’
Somewhere a bullwhip cracked.
‘The warders mustn’t catch us talking or they’ll lengthen our sentences. I should have been released months ago’
