‘Watson, what were you thinking?’ asked Sherlock Holmes pointing to the recent edition of The Strand.

Dr Watson’s ears reddened and then he replied, ‘I thought you didn’t read “that drivel”.’

Holmes tossed the offending publication at his friend. ‘This Mazarin Case is obviously not even written by you. It was your publicist, Doyle, wasn’t it?’

‘Yes. He is very much a fan of yours and he wanted to try his hand at penning one of your cases. His editor had been clamouring for my next mystery for his latest edition and I was still recovering from Evan’s bullet wound.’

Doyle should know he cannot live up to Watson's authorial skills.

Always blame Doyle for the bad writing.

I love this little footnote to the Mazarin Stone.

Better reading of a Holmes case from someone other than Watson, than not reading at all. (I don't think it's too bad, myself.)

I like how disgruntled Sherlock is by this inferior case write-up.

Doyle might improve, given time...

Although MAZA is not one of my favourites, it does contain one of my favourite Holmsian put-downs:

"It is a small point, Count Sylvius, but perhaps you would kindly give me my prefix when you address me. You can understand that, with my routine of work, I should find myself on familiar terms with half the rogues' gallery, and you will agree that exceptions are invidious."

Thanks!

Indeed. He does seem too annoyed for someone who claims to not read the stories.
Thanks!

Doyle is a hack. Luckily, Watson has complete faith in him.
Thanks!

Poor ACD... I always give him a hard time when I make him a character in his own universe.
Thanks!

Of course in reality I admire Sir Arthur very much.
However, I like to take the piss out of this fictitious Doyle.
Thanks!
