‘IT WAS A FOOLISH GAMBLE, WATSON!’

I suppose it was. I had acted on instinct, and despite Holmes’ admonitions, I did not regret it. Of course I could not tell him that. Not now, not in the midst of his furious tirade. Nor would I argue that he would have done the same thing had he thought things through. He would never admit to that. To him, I took inexcusable chances, whereas he took calculated risks.

‘YOU'RE GRINNING!?!’

We had both survived, countless lives were saved, my injuries, though painful, would heal... and he cared.

‘It's the morphine,’ I replied.

Wonderful layered drabble. Love Watson's calm acceptance of the double standard, and his blaming the morphine to avoid a pointless argument.

Even as the morphine takes hold, Watson is profoundly aware that the dispassionate Holmes is LOSING HIS $HIT.
Thanks!

Awww, you're fooling no one, Watson, with the idea the grin is due solely to the morphine.

Yup. Watson is completely happy with the outcome of his foolish gamble.
Thanks!

Well, of course all of Holmes's foolish gambles are "calculated risks." It's the only way he can rationalize some of his choices.

Morphine is a convenient scapegoat. ;)

Holmes is already losing it, imagine his response if Watson said "Aww, Holmes, you care after all."
Thanks!

Holmes the hypocrite. Hey Watson let's try this madness-inducing drug together, yay! ...HOW DARE YOU ENDANGER YOURSELF!

Good stuff, that morphine.
Thanks!

Indeed, and Watson is perfectly content with the results.
Thanks!

Well, Watson is not stupid enough to point out to Holmes that he was becoming emotional.
Thanks!

This line "To him, I took inexcusable chances, whereas he took calculated risks." is just to damn good to ignore! Excellent drabble!

'Course it is ;) And yes, great line about chances vs. risks.

Thanks so much! The drabble was built around that line, but it is the morphine line and all that implies that makes it for me.
