Watson had been in equal parts astonished and alarmed at how much I deduced from his brother’s watch, and before I realised it, I had gone too far. I long suspected that some of his family remained in Scotland and that something monumental had caused his estrangement.

Clearly shaken, and unwilling to discuss the matter further, he excused himself to take some fresh air leaving me at odds between my native curiosity and my respect for his privacy.

If I were unable to ask Watson himself, surely an examination of the mailing box the watch came in would prove enlightening.

Poor Holmes, so engrossed in his own clever deductions he failed to see how his words affected his fellow-lodger.
Thanks!

Hmmm, yes. Holmes respects privacy - in that he usually chooses not to blab about what he knows unless it's important. But I don't think deduction is something he can turn off. If he truly wishes to not know (ha!) he will have to make a concerted effort NOT to see that box. Don't worry Holmes, Watson won't mind unless you are blunt and rude again. :)

Agreed! Holmes' innate curiosity combined with his formidible intellect make him a great detective. Tact and manners limp along behind, trying to keep up.
Thanks!

Rationalizing that this will be less painful than further questioning his flatmate.

"How did I offend you, Watson?" asked an astonished Holmes. "You gave me the watch and issued the challenge yourself."
Thanks!

Better examining the box than pushing Watson further. (And ouch, the pun-ishment...)

There is no stopping Holmes now that he has scented a mystery. He will use every means to find out the whole story short of discussing it with Watson.
Thanks, and some pun-ishment is to be expected.

Yes, I think that Watson will have a good effect on Holmes, eventually.
I do apologise for the title, though.
Thanks!

I imagine Watson's estrangement from his brother to be a very important point in Watson's life. Thanks!
