Characters: Major John Watson, RAMC, Sergeant Mervyn Bunter

Author's Notes: July 16th 2016 prompt: “I Feel A Bit Prouder Knowing Sherlock Holmes Is British”

‘I assure you, Sergeant Bunter, he is doing very well.’ This was not the first time I had found the soldier stationed at his officer’s side. ‘You need your rest too.’

He stood to attention and with enunciation that would put high society to shame replied ‘Yes Sir. No disrespect, Doctor, but I am not at all tired.’

The years that Holmes had laboured encouraging me to develop my observational skills paid off. I sensed that something was wrong. The Sergeant knew his officer better than I and his polite refusal to leave him made me re-examine my earlier prognosis.

Bunter, Hastings, and Watson should get together for drinks sometime. Thanks!

I had to google Sergeant Bunter, excellent usage of another character!

For all kinds of reasons it had to be Bunter and not Lord Peter.
Thanks!

What an excellent idea! And good old Bunter.

We wish more doctors had learned from Holmes not to grow too fond of their initial theory.

Watson may be amongst the oldest active medical officers serving in France but I do not picture him being stuck in his ways. And with his natural observational skills honed over the years by working with Sherlock Holmes, Watson may be able to keep up with the younger doctors and their new medicine and techniques.

Naturally Bunter would stay at his post.

Like any stoic, heroic Boswell should.
Thanks!

Good man, Bunter. Lord Peter needs you... and to be quite honest, I've always gotten the impression that, at least when they originally return from the front, Bunter needs him, because for some people it's easier to deal with their own demons if they have to stay on top of them in order to take care of someone else.

I think you have a very valid point in Bunter also needing Wimsey. Thanks!

I'm ashamed to admit I've never read Lord Peter but without knowing any of the background of Bunter, I like his interaction with Watson.

Bunter is Peter Wimsey's Boswell. He served as his batman during WWI and saved his life by digging him out of a collapsed trench. Wimsey has real problems with shellshock and Bunter is very good to him. I first read Dorothy L. Sayers when I was a kid and had finished all the ACD Sherlock Holmes. I tried Agatha Christie too but... perhaps it was the characterisations... I could not get hooked.

Thanks! There are similarities between Bunter and Watson that I wanted to exploit.
