“My dear Watson, I write these few lines through the courtesy of Mr Moriarty, who awaits my convenience…”

He had kept it all these years, my handwritten missive, in an envelope amongst his other important papers: the deeds to his properties, his marriage licence, his last will and testament.

The letter itself bore the signs of constant handling. Watson must have reviewed it countless times over the years as a warning against the cost of friendship; the fragile paper nearly disintegrated at the fold, its continued existence remaining the very condemnation that he would never say to me in words.

Well spotted! You picked up on something I had inadvertently alluded to. Once the drabble was finished, I saw the implication and I wondered if I should change it or not and decided to leave it alone. Any character deaths will come with BIG WARNING LABELS. I promise.
