‘I’m sorry that it’s so hard for you and your kind, Wiggins.’

‘Naw, it’s life, innit? Them that has and them that hasn’t. We makes the best of it. We get by.’

‘But what happens to those who cannot make ends meet?’

‘Sometimes it’s slim pickings, but someone in our mob usually gots enough to spare. We look out for each other. And sometimes there’s a soft touch who will give us food. Thanks agin for the apple.’

‘London seems darker and uglier now than when I was a scholar...’

‘...S’okay, Doc, you’ll make it. You’re one of us now.’

Watson is feeling sorry for the kids and Wiggins recognises that the doctor has similar concerns about himself. Thanks!

Poor Watson. Perhaps London was not a wise choice so soon after the war.

Perhaps not...but then, where in the world can one go to escape human misery? It simply takes different forms in different locations, does it not?

Thanks! I try not to have Wiggins too cheery in his poverty. He is a realist even at a young age. Day to day survival is what he deals with not concentrating on the injustice of his condition. His survival depends on his gang which acts as his family.

Good old Wiggins. Mates look out for each other, don't they?

Yup. But also, it's a bit of Arthur Shappey:
Don' worry, Skip. The Swiss guys will get used to you.
