In the drawing room, Dr Watson stood at the large window that overlooked the lush Surrey fields. He glanced once again at the letter in his hand and then out again at the falling rain, and smiled.
‘What’s so amusing?’ asked his host, Colonel Hayter.
‘Holmes’ letter. Apparently, London has been baking since last week. All the rain is falling here, it seems.’
‘I’m sorry about that. When I invited you to take the country air, I never imagined this deluge.’
‘Actually, I find it rather peaceful, and I think we both saw enough of the July sun in Afghanistan.’
