Beneath an overcast sky an uneven skirl of bagpipes drifted across the Sussex downs.

Sherlock Holmes winced as another foul squeak rent the funerary dirge.

‘I thought young Oxley was improving; what with all the practice,’ said Dr Watson as he approached. ‘...He’s certainly off today.’

‘Harry Oxley was conscripted two months ago. That is his sister.’

Watson did not reply. Holmes turned to examine his friend from top to bottom: the peaked cap, the shined boots, the mended sleeve, the packed valise, the worn expression.

‘I understand why you must go, Watson, but I don’t have to like it.’

At least Holmes knows better than to try to stop him....

Yeah. They've been friends for over thirty years. Holmes may never fully "get" Watson's limits, but at least he understands his patriotism and sense of duty.
(Thanks!)

Whimper. At first I thought the funeral dirge was for Watson. Sadly, it still may be.

True. Although I will warn for character death when (if) the time comes. I have trouble with death-fic so I may never go there.
(Thanks!)

Touching and multilayered. I love the way I read your drabbles, reread them, and then read them again after checking the comments, and I get something new each time. You have a genuine gift for subtlety. :)
