Everyone in London agreed that there had never been a hotter July than the one they were experiencing in 1881. Mr Sherlock Holmes regarded his flatmate suffering with the stifling humidity and wondered how someone who had lived in warmer climes could have trouble with the undoubted more temperate British summer.

‘Watson, I have decided to take the Blackpool case after all. I hope you will accompany me.'

‘If you wish, Holmes, but you weren’t interested in it at first. What changed your mind?’

‘I love this city but I swear I just saw a pigeon lay a fried egg.’
