Sherlock Holmes was about to enter his flat when he heard raised voices coming from within.

‘Again, Dr Watson, the decision of the Board is final. We find you medically unsound to resume your commission. There’s no use arguing. We came in person, as a courtesy, to inform you.’

‘Courtesy?!? I deserve better than this.’

‘Listen here: The. Army. Does. Not. Need. Crippled. Officers. We’ll show ourselves out.’

The door opened and two men wearing Army Medical Department insignia exited.

Watson stood inside; a white-knuckled grip on his cane, his face flushed with anger.

‘I overheard,’ said Holmes. ‘I’m sorry,’

Ow. Must have been early on when Watson thought he could go back to his old unit once he'd recuperated - and he'd have been hideously mortified to have his yet-unknown flatmate overhear this.

"...my health irretrievably ruined, but with permission from a paternal government to spend the next nine months in attempting to improve it."

The nine months are up. Watson's health has not improved enough and he is cut loose on a half-pay pension. Holmes would have predicted this but kept these thoughts to himself.

Oh what a painful moment; not only the shame and importance Watson must have felt but the additional mortification of having your new flatmate listening to that.
Hopefully Holmes would be able to distract him with something or other
