There was no love lost between the City of London Police and Scotland Yard at higher levels but most street-level constables were immune to the political machinations of their seniors. So it was not strange that Scotland Yard’s constable Clarke was tipped off by one of his City counterparts.
‘We’ve arrested a couple of suspicious characters tonight. Turns out they are your guv’nor’s sleuth hounds: Holmes and Watson. Neither would tell us what they were up to so we locked them up.’
Clarke winced. It had gone past midnight and he knew he would have to rouse Inspector Lestrade.
