‘She’s not my dog, Lestrade.’
‘Well then, Dr Watson’s dog is staring at me.’
‘She’s not his either.’
‘Confound you, Holmes! There is a black greyhound with an enormous plaster cast on its hind leg, laying on your rug, and she’s staring at me.’
‘Oh, that’s Winnie, known professionally as Win Some Moor, a champion of 72 races, now retired at age three years due to her injury.’
‘Will Mrs Hudson let you keep a pet?’
‘A pet? Don’t be absurd. Winnie is a witness to the recent poisonings at the track.’
