‘Watson!’ called Sherlock Holmes as he bound up the steps from the foyer. He was surprised to receive no answer and burst into the sitting room he shared with Dr Watson. His fellow-lodger sat motionless on the settee.
‘Watson, what is… that?’
A battered cardboard box marked with the Army Post insignia from Afghanistan sat unopened in Watson’s trembling hands. Watson seemed not to hear.
‘Doctor, do you know what this is?’ Holmes repeated.
Watson blinked. ‘It contains my personal items recovered after the siege at Candahar. There was a letter.’ he motioned vaguely at a faded piece of paper.
