The ruffians had been waiting for them on Waterloo Bridge. How they had known about the police photographs was a mystery for another time.
Holmes and Watson were outnumbered but held their ground until one of the thugs made for the envelope Watson clutched to his chest.
A powerful quick kick caused the doctor to stagger over the edge. He flailed wildly and managed to grab hold but the photographs fell into the Thames leaving no known gnomon for Holmes to gauge his observations against.
The gloating criminals, realising Holmes would not leave his colleague’s side, receded into the mists.
