‘Watson, could you look into…’ was a familiar request. Sherlock Holmes often needed an extra set of eyes to examine old records. I was grateful for these opportunities and spent many hours in the British Museum Reading Room and the General Registry Office at Somerset House.
As a mere physician, the Public Records Office was closed to me and therefore I enlisted the aid of Maurice Faber who possessed the necessary law degree that afforded him entry, and at the London Library, I had an ally in the sub-librarian Lomax. All of us enjoyed our minor roles in Holmes’ adventures.
