At the University of London, I was the very archetype of the struggling medical student so I had little time for the theatre. Admittedly, this had more to do with an uneven allocation of funds and free time towards beer and billiards and away from the finer arts. Music halls were more my style anyway, with raucous songs and bawdy themes. Ah, youth.
It was Sherlock Holmes who introduced me to the opera, classical concerts, and grand theatre. I felt quite jumped-up in my newly acquired dinner jacket, but he insisted the entertainment mattered less than being seen in attendance.
