‘You’ve just answered your own question, Holmes, besides it was only a headache— not unexpected considering the coshing I received last week.’

‘That was twelve days ago. Do you mean to say you’ve had a headache since then and this did not raise any alarms with you?’

‘I’ve seen worse. I’ve had worse. I am sorry that Jenks got away. You shouldn’t have stopped for me.’

‘You collapsed. What else could I do?’

‘Are you angry?’

‘No,’ said Holmes unconvincingly.
