Mrs Hudson heard the commotion in the pre-dawn hours. This was the last straw. Her lodgers had been out all night and they were going to wake the house with their racket. She threw on her dressing gown to confront them in the foyer but was stopped by a look in Dr Watson’s eyes. Mr Holmes too was looking very grim.
‘Tea, gentlemen?’
‘Yes, thank you, if it isn’t too much bother,’ Dr Watson replied.
When the tea was ready she entered the sitting room and found them both asleep; Holmes on the settee, and Watson in the armchair nearby.
