‘Well done, Watson! It was in the urn, just as you said.’
How could I tell Holmes how I knew where the artefact would be found? He is a creature of reason and this crossed the line from improbable to impossible. He would never believe that the Contessa in the old painting had pointed the urn out to me.
I hardly believed it myself and I went back to the library to re-examine the portrait. The Contessa sat, motionless as before, but the urn was gone.
As I gaped, the greyhound at her feet turned his head and winked.
