‘I doubt that.’

‘Their adjectives were: uninspired, workmanlike, dull.’

‘That’s absurd. When was this?’

‘It was my first recital. I was eight.’

‘My dear fellow, did it never occur to you that they were wrong?’

No, not at all. Holmes knows he was fully-formed upon his birth. Or, maybe the critics were intimidated by the prodigy (especially if the eight-year old had some attitude).
