By the light of the conflagration I could see that the child had been beaten before being left to die in the burning warehouse. I felt for a pulse and listened for his heartbeat.
‘Doctor, please do something!’ urged Sherlock Holmes.
‘All my instruments, bandages, and medicines are back in our sitting room.’
‘Blast! This makes the fourth Irregular attacked—’
‘Quiet! He’s still breathing. Quickly, give me your coat, and go find something we can use as a stretcher.’
‘How about this crate lid?’
‘Perfect! We’ll knock up Stamford. He lives close by and he owes me a favour.’
