today’s work

Newly arrived Captain Litton-Whyte joined his fellow surgeons at the mess table. ‘Where did they dig up that old relic? His suturing was positively mediaeval!’

‘Surely you don’t mean the Major,’ Mr Evans growled.

‘That wound has to drain and we are short on silk,’ said Captain Bowley.

‘Git,’ another snarled.

This was not the reception Litton-Whyte had anticipated. The others stood to leave.

‘Major Watson has forgotten more about medicine than you will ever know,’ said Lannark ‘Here’s a tip, old boy: don’t let the stretcher-bearers hear you bad-mouthing the Major, or you’ll wake up with your head bashed-in.’

Supplementary Notes: Major Watson is commanding a field hospital at this time. He is not at a front line casualty clearing station.

A symptom of the exact same thinking that produced that war in the first place - must try all these neat new bombs and gases and aeroplanes out!

Woo hoo! That's telling him off! I know virtually nothing about Evans, Cpt Bowley, Lannark, and Mr. Anonymous but I like all of them already.

When I was getting my CNA my clinical instructor told us, "There is Test World and Real World. I'm preparing you for Test World but just know that things are different in the Real World." Methinks the young captain would do well to remember that.
