‘It has to be here!’ said Sherlock Holmes in frustration. The detective needed the piece of evidence to prove to the police that Sullivan McNaulty had not been working alone. His accomplice had kept watch in the mews while McNaulty bludgeoned the unfortunate constable.
Holmes was on his hands and knees, frantically searching, and muttering, ‘I swear he smoked a cigarette.’
Dr Watson looked up at the shirts suspended from a clothesline and walked down the passage toward the street, examining the ground.
‘Here it is.’
‘Watson, how!?’
‘The laundress tossed out her wash water. The butt was carried downslope.’
