‘Doctor Watson, please come,’ Freddie Euston pleaded. ‘It’s Wiggins: he’s sick!’

The young street arab was so agitated that Watson immediately took up his doctor’s bag and hailed a cab.

They entered the riverside warren and found Wiggins lying face-down in a puddle of his own sick.

‘Is he dead?’ Freddie whispered fearfully.

‘No, his pulse is strong. Where did he get the gin?’

‘Wha-a-a-at gin?’ Freddie stammered.

‘Come now, I can smell it in the vomit. How much did he drink?’

The boy revealed a half-empty glass jar.

‘Will he live?’

‘Yes, but he’ll regret it tomorrow,’ Watson promised.

Yes, the poor were most affected by the lure of cheap gin and sometimes it was cut with other (sometimes even poisonous) alcohols. Thanks!

Absolutly. And a poor kid like Wiggins would only have access to the cheap stuff. Hopefully he has had such a bad experience with it that he avoids it in the future.
