‘Surely, if I give him an expensive umbrella, he will take better care of it,’ Mary reasoned.

Holmes rolled his eyes. ‘Your theory has merit but will not stand in practice. It has been tried and failed already. Just ask Mrs Hudson.’

‘Perhaps they could be purchased in great quantity. He cannot possibly lose them all.’

‘My dear, your husband only loses thirty percent of them. Some are stolen, but many more are simply given away.’
