They are like chalk and cheese, mused Inspector Lestrade as he observed the consulting detective, Sherlock Holmes and his associate, Dr Watson, investigating the burglary at the Hotel Royale.

Mr Holmes has an unbearable superciliousness about him whenever he makes a discovery, as if to rub the police’s nose in it for missing such an obvious clue. Bloody exhibitionist! I used to get bent out of shape but Dr Watson would give me that look; one which told me not to take Mr Holmes too seriously.

Now I listen more and bluster less and more successful convictions are the result.
