Sherlock Holmes, rejuvenated at long last by finally getting a full night’s sleep joined me at the breakfast table.

‘Good morning, Watson,’ he chirped with the cheeriness usually reserved for the denouements of particularly problematic cases.

‘You slept well, I take it?’

‘Splendidly! Thank you for your recommendation. A good book was just the ticket.’

I scanned my bookshelf and, finding no gap, asked, ‘Which one did you choose?’

‘The one on your nightstand. You were sleeping. I didn’t think you would mind-’

The sneaky devil had lifted my Bible!

‘-Made it to Chapter Five… all those begattings. So soporific.’

Be fair, the "begat" stuff in the Bible is as soporific as the lists of how many jars of oil and measures of barley are owed for various crimes in the Code of Hammurabi.

Stunning stuff, but nothing compares to the Domesday Book (in the original Mediæval Latin manuscript form, of course).
