As the centre of the Empire, London's promise of a better life attracted people from all over the world. However many new immigrants ended up in Spitalfields, one of the most poverty-striken neighbourhoods.
'French? I thought it was Spanish,' exclaimed Dr Watson. 'The child said his name was Pedro.'
'No, Watson, he said “Je suis perdu”. He cannot find his parents. How can you know Greek and Latin, and speak several Hindoostani dialects, and still not understand French?'
'Probably the same way as you can play the violin like a virtuoso and are still not able to read sheet music.'
