John gave his wand a meaningful flourish.

'Expecto patronum.'

He and Sherlock looked around for signs of magic. There were none.

'I give up. The Sorting Hat got it wrong. I'm just not magical.'

'You do have magic, John, but the Hat has been off its game for years. It sorted Mycroft into Hufflepuff.'

'But you and he went to Durmstrang.'

'My father... well, he's very old fashioned. He cut our family ties to Hogwarts.'

'Because Mycroft was a Hufflepuff? That seems unfair. What is Mycroft like?'

'He's so fat, his patronus is a cake!'

Oh I love this! Watson as a Squib-who-eventually-finds-his-magic somehow makes perfect sense!

I personally would have sorted him into Gryffindor, but perhaps the entire point is that the Sorting Hat works in mysterious ways hahaha

Actually, in 2011, EVERYBODY writing BBC/Potter alternate universes was sorting John into Gryffindor. On a lark, I went in a different direction and it turned out pretty well. Putting John in Slytherin and Sherlock in Durmstrang made them both outsiders.
