It should have been me, thought Sherlock Holmes as he watched his friend, Dr Watson, resting for the first time in days. In retaliation for Holmes’ clever discoveries, and unable to exact their revenge upon him, the cowards had brutally attacked the doctor instead.
Watson’s face had been smashed and his jaw had to be wired closed, but the oculist Gibbs was optimistic that his eyesight could be saved.
Watson regarded Holmes with his one good eye as his fellow-lodger lit a cigarette and gave a small nod.
Holmes nodded in return and held the cigarette to Watson’s swollen mouth.
