While the mountain passes offer cooling breezes, Afghanistan’s plains in July can be a hellish place. The rain showers of springtime were months behind us when our Regiment first arrived in Kabul.
For the push on to Candahar, our quartermaster had to stock up on dried apricots, nuts, and other non-perishable food items for the troops. The horses too, had to be provisioned with cartloads of dried hay.
The camels fared better, being able to forage the native gillyflowers for carnations and wallflowers. It did not help with their temperament, but at least it make their breath smell somewhat sweeter.
