‘No, Inspector, it’s not like that.’

‘Oh, I know! He’s found where Mrs Hudson hid his violin bow!’

‘Is that what happened to it? No, we were playing chess—’

‘—And you won? That’s astonishing! Imagine you beating the smartest man in London!’

‘Thank you for your confidence. Technically, Holmes won.’

‘So I would expect. What’s the problem?’

‘He realised I let him win.’

Thanks! There is a perception that proficiency at chess is a sign of intelligence and I am sure there is some positive correlation. However, I also believe that it takes a certain type of intelligence and patience, and I see that more in Watson than in Holmes.

To paraphrase a thing I saw on Facebook:
Sherlock Holmes has the kind of intellect that lets him deduce what the punch-in key code is to open a door. John Watson has the kind of intellect that lets him recognize the lock's light is green, just turn the handle and open the door already.

Yes! I could see that in BBC Sherlock. In fact, having a clever Watson was what attracted me to BBC Sherlock in the first place. Of course, the series declined over its run, and that's a shame. Ritchie!verse also featured a competent Watson (they owe us another sequel). And Ian Hart's Watson is also a win!
