The first - and only - time Holmes ever saw Watson pick up a gun in his bedroom was also the day… that Holmes resolved to never enter Dr Watson’s room unannounced again. The combination of facing the business end of the Webley and Dr Watson’s momentary disconcerted look of surprise was enough to make a clever man like Sherlock Holmes reassess his life choices.
Of course the doctor was mortified at his own reaction and apologised profusely for the obvious fright he had given his fellow-lodger. Holmes, too, was also embarrassed and promised to knock first in the future.
