‘Holmes, does Lord Braeburn have any connections to India?’
‘I doubt it. Wait, the Who’s Who says his father was with the East India Company and the dates indicate Lord Braeburn grew up in Bengal. Is that significant?’
‘Possibly. Along the Hoogli River, children were fishing with cormorants. A band was tied around the bird’s neck. The cormorant would catch a fish but unable to swallow, would return to its master. The band would be removed and the bird would be rewarded with a smaller fish. Perhaps they could be taught to retrieve other objects.’
‘Like spent bullet casings?’
‘Exactly!’
