It took years for my fellow-lodger and London’s most effective consulting detective to realise that he needed a system to organise his case notes and that task fell to me. Of course, some of the more sensitive material had to be encrypted and that brings me to the Giant Rat of Sumatra.
Not a case of a rodent of unusual size, it actually referred to a large diamond which had been amongst the spoils from the Empire’s conflict with the Dutch in Indonesia. Any gem which earns a nickname often comes with a curse (in the form of men’s greed).
