Murray woke from an unsettling dream and scrambled to his feet. The bodies of his regiment lay scattered clusters in the pre-dawn. The sight echoed his nightmares and unnerved him.
After yesterday’s hard march they all just kipped where the rocks were soft. Today, they would battle Ayoub Khan.
Murray climbed to higher ground to catch the sunrise. It was the colour of blood. Footfalls followed his path.
The young Medical Officer Watson approached looking uneasy.
‘Is it always like this?’ Watson asked, handing him a warm jar of something like tea.
‘No. I have a bad feeling about this.’

Supplementary Notes: I always try to write about about Maiwand on July 27th. I am currently re-reading Good Omens by Terry Pratchett and Neil Gaiman so I borrowed the title for today's work.

Date: 2020-09-24 02:21 pm (UTC)Murray surveyed the young officer. He was young, eager, and a little naive. What made matters worse was that everyone liked him, and I do mean everyone: officers, the rank and file, even the muckers. That's a bad omen, but what would be young Watson's outcome considering the battle to come? Murray had to know.
So he asked: 'Captain Watson, are you perchance married and have children or one on the way?'
'No to the former, and not to my knowledge to the latter,' was the pawky response. A good omen
'Any doting parents?'
'Alas, neither kith nor kin.'A good omen
'Are you a gambler?'
'Of course I am a gambler... I took the Queen's shilling, didn't I?' A bad omen
'And have you just recently won a huge jackpot?
'Ha! No. My lot seems to be dispersing my coins to others.' A good omen
Murray nodded and calculated Watson's odds at 50/50.
