Inspector Athelney Jones was disconsolate. Jonathan Small had succeeded in seeding the Thames with the ill-gotten treasure from the Orient. Now chained and manacled, Small grinned in defiance.
That was the end of it, or so we thought, until I started encountering the inspector in unexpected places. Mary spotted him first and suspected him of following her. Days later, he was there when I went to the bank. Again, after our marriage, there he was, outside the courthouse.
‘What do you want, Jones,’ I demanded.
‘I just want to know that the box had been empty when you opened it.’
